The Written Word VS Visuals

In our Blogs and on Instagram, we often talk about the benefits of Visual Communication, but have we shown a real comparison of the two forms of Communication?
Below is a written example, giving a vivid and well written description of a Doodle, the other, the Doodle itself, which one catches your attention?

Text Example

The Woman smiled happily into the distance, her eyes closed, deep in pleasant thought of the fields she used to run through as a child. She leaned herself against a somehow invisible fence whilst her hair laid itself neatly upon her shoulders. Her blue Jumper fit so snugly the summer air warmed by the sun gently blew against her as she simply enjoyed the pleasant moment.

The Written Word

The written word may provide a more detailed description, but it's immediately this off-putting block of text. Most people in a work scenario or a potential customer on the street will at best skim read it.

Yes you can go into detail with the information you are trying to push across but what if there is a language barrier? Google Translate is useful but it won’t look professional to a Client. So how are we going to deliver a short, sharp and snappy message to its intended audience?

The Visual

Boom! One quick glance at the Visual and you have at least a rough idea of what's going on. There is a woman, in a blue piece of clothing, smiling with hair down to her shoulders.

That is a majority of the information from the original brief Paragraph is shown to you in less than a second. That is the pure power of Visuals. Yes, you don’t have an indepth look at the information but you do have the attention of whoever sees it.

In a Presentation, this image, accompanied by a little bit of personal speaking will be far more impressive and visually stimulating than a wall of text that you point to occasionally.

Visuals can go far more in depth as well and that’s what Natalka Design is really good at, seriously, check out our services and see if we can help you to Visualise various aspects of your Business. We didn’t even go into infographics in this Blog.

Using Both

Now on rare occasions you may still want to give the full in-depth look at the information, this is where you can mix up both. By simply placing the text under the image you fall into a win, win scenario.

A majority of people will still skim read but they will have more of an understanding thanks to the Visual. Those who read the text in full will have an easier time understanding and processing what you are saying. The last and perhaps most powerful effect of mixing the two is that the Visual will capture attention whilst overall the information will be retained far easier.

So in conclusion, definitely make use of Visuals and if you're stuck, just ask us for help.
